Another potential trends night ruined by American Idol - maybe I should quit trying to write posts on nights that this show airs, or just take a hiatus until the season is over. Either that, or turn this into an American Idol blog? Nah.
I am torn; while I am sick of American Idol influencing my daily trends posts, I am at the same time happy to see “jai guru deva om” as the #1 search term tonight. I love The Beatles, and “Across the Universe” is a great song. While “jai guru deva om” might make good lyrics for a trippy 60’s song, I can’t help but imagine how it must be confusing for today’s kids, as they hear the song being butchered on American Idol. For the protection of children, I would like to suggest to the Fox Network that they censor all transcendental meditation mantras in the future. Who knows what kind of crazy Maharishi-led cult might be recruiting through subliminal television messages. The only way to be certain your children are safe, is to censor television, and that letter writing campaign isn’t going to start itself! Get to work!
We are young…
heartache to heartache…
Ah, a classic 80’s ballad from Pat Benatar - what are you doing in the top 7 google trends today? It seems that the song was performed on American Idol tonight, causing the masses of teeny boppers to search for details about this elusive and mysterious top 5 song of 1984. Hopefully Pat Benatar’s scary look is something the kids can relate to, and there will be an awesome resurgence of 80’s pop/rock over the next few years.
More likely, American Idol will tell people what music they like and want to listen to on a week to week basis, and the herd of sheep that is today’s youth with give Apple their allowance money to download their favorite Idol’s songs on Itunes, so they can transfer it to their shiny new Ipod, and be a unique and beautiful snowflake.
